On Company was founded having identified major barriers for non-technical customers to access affordable, plain english, web design services.

Research undertaken from Dec 05 to Mar 06, commissioned by Auckland entrepreneur Andy Mundell, revealed a staggering 82% of New Zealand businesses were still yet to have a website and that NZ's uptake lagged far behind other OECD countries.  (Sources: OECD / Statistics NZ / .nzDNC)

Why so many NZ businesses had yet to cross this divide was a question explored in a series of focus groups in Feb 06 where 93 small business owners were asked "what's preventing your business from having a website".  The reasons sighted were consistent and able to be summarised into these 3 statements:

1.  "I dont understand it"

2.  "I dont know where to get it"

3.  "It's too expensive" 


Solving these 3 things was OnCompany's founding principle .

The opportunity realised was to establish a customer focused, retail-based, bricks & morter store delivering e-business products and services in plain english, pre-priced, in the real world".

Orignally branded 'WebsitesEtc™', the company received an opportunity in August 2006 to acquire the domain name 'on.co.nz'.  With obvious brand potential, 'on.co.nz' was seen the ideal fit. Negotiations to aquire the domain succeeded late Sep 06.

OnCompany's pilot store opened April 2007 at 213 Great South Rd, Greenlane, Auckland. The store has high exposure situated at the busy Greenlane Rd/Great South Rd intersection with traffic volume around 70,000 cars per day.

Combining this with traditional mass-media and business to business marketing (catalogues, mailers, radio and print advertising), OnCompany enjoyed rapid growth increasing its team to 8 inhouse web designers, developers and support staff, as well as achieving break-even within the first 6 months.
